Cleaners to Avoid:
For starters, some cleaners should be avoided at all costs. Bleach and hydrogen peroxide, for example, can wreak havoc on your car's upholstery. Another group to avoid are any cleaners with an ammonia base. These can cause damage to touch screens by removing their anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coatings. Furthermore, don't use anything abrasive when cleaning a touchscreen, including paper towels or tissues. Lastly, use common sense. Don't treat all surfaces equally.
What to Do to Clean for Coronavirus?
First, wear gloves when cleaning and disinfecting a vehicle. The CDC suggests the following:
"Gloves and any other disposable PPE used for cleaning and disinfecting the vehicle should be removed and disposed of after cleaning; wash hands immediately after removal of gloves and PPE with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available."cdc.gov
Use Alcohol-Based Solutions
The Centers for Disease Control suggests cleaning with alcohol cleaners of 70% alcohol is most effective. Alcohol not only kills Coronavirus, but it's car friendly. Just be sure to keep it away from leather upholstery. Most leather seats have a protective layer, but unless you know the specifications, it is much better to be safe rather than sorry.
A Soap & Water Treatment
Another effective option which is truly effective on many surfaces, including your leather seats, is a simple mix of soap and water. Just try not to scrub too hard, or get the interior fabrics too wet.
Microfiber Towels or 100% Cotton T-Shirts
Generally speaking, old cotton t-shirts and/or microfiber towels are a useful solution that can be applied almost anywhere.
Regarding Leather Surfaces
Despite the fact that we've mentioned leather several times above, it bears repeating. Avoid bleach, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia-based cleaners, and alcohol. Leather-specific cleaning wipes are ideal, but applying water and soap with a damp cloth will likely do the trick.
Stopping the Spread of Covid-19
Ideally, the strongest solution to stop the community spread of Coronavirus is to stay home and not share a vehicle. If you must share a car, however, drive a rental, get your car serviced, or transport others, then frequent cleaning and disinfecting is the best way to keep yourself and others safe.
